Thank God, I’m a Book-Biz Boy

A Saturday Rant 3-30-02

It is written:

Roses are red,
Violets are blueish
If it weren’t for Easter
You’d all be Jewish

Last night I was went with my first and current wife to attend midnight mass
with some friends of ours. Father Mike gave what I thought was a long,
mind-numbing sermon and I scribbled the following on the back of the program.
I’m sure I’m on my way to hell for not paying attention to the priest. Anyway, I
want to wish a Happy Easter to all of my Christian friends.

THANK GOD, I’M A BOOK-BIZ BOY

Well, life in the book-biz is kinda laid back
Ain’t much an old writer like me can’t hack
The books go out, returns come the back
Thank God, I’m A Book-Biz Boy

Well a simple writing life never did me no harm
Yet the bottom line’s less than workin’ on a farm
But my house is filled with literary charm
Thank God I’m a Book-Biz boy

When the work’s all done and the sun’s settin’ low
I pull out my keyboard,  get my notes in a row
The hands are old, so I type kinda slow
Thank God I’m a Book-Biz boy

I’d write on the list all day if I could
But Heard and Hudgins wouldn’t take it very good
So I write where I can, not always what I should
Thank God, I’m a Book-Biz boy

Between Borders and Ingram, I’m caught in the middle,
When the books come back I feel I’m fryin’ on the griddle
This Biz ain’t nothin’ but a funny, funny riddle
Thank God I’m A Book-Biz boy

Well I wouldn’t trade my life for diamonds or jewels
I never was one of them money hungry fools
I’d rather have my keyboard and my writin’ tools
Thank God I’m a Book-Biz boy

Yeah, corporate folks in  black limousines
Wishing they could work in T-shirts and jeans
Yeah, this biz is better than it often seems
I thank God I’m a Book-Biz boy

Between Borders and Ingram, I’m caught in the middle,
When the books come back I feel I’m fryin’ on the griddle
This Biz ain’t nothin’ but a funny, funny riddle
Thank God I’m A Book-Biz boy

Well, my daddy was a writer til the day he died
And he took me by the hand and held me close to his side
He said…’Live a good life and publish books with pride
And thank God you’re a Book-Biz boy”

My daddy taught me young how to write just a little
He said Barnes & Noble would play me like a fiddle
Taught me how to fight ‘em and give in just a little
Thank God I’m a Book-Biz boy

Between Borders and Ingram, I’m caught in the middle,
When the books come back I feel I’m fryin’ on the griddle
This Biz ain’t nothin’ but a funny, funny riddle
Thank God I’m A Book-Biz boy
